The Dietary Guidelines for Americans is published every 5 years by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Guidelines provide authoritative advice for Americans about how good dietary habits can promote health and reduce risk for major chronic diseases.
The 2005 edition of the Guidelines was released on January 12, 2005. In February 2005, NutriGenie releases Nutrition 2005, the first, and so far, the only, nutrition analysis software in existence that incorporates BOTH the September 2002 guidelines issued by the Institute of Medicine, the medical division of the National Academies AND the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans published by the US Department of Health and Human Services. The 2002 Institute of Medicine guidelines establish for the first time a range of recommended amounts (Dietary Reference Intakes or DRIs) for macronutrients
